Featured Senser: Marina, 26, Fashion Writer and Trendspotter
Every week we take a closer look at the individuals that make up our band of creative thinkers and doers. We have a simple but grandiose mission to 'make things better and make better things' and in order to do that we need to know the landscape we operate within and where it is going. Trend watching is key and we have few better than Marina when it comes to fashion. Here she describes her work:
What do you do and what excites you about it?
I work as a fashion writer contributor for Vogue.es and I'm a fashion blogger in trendsforthemasses.com. What i do is forecasting trends not in the streets but on the Internet. Watching lots of street style blogs, egoblogs, celebrities, runways, fashion editorials and online shops, I identify trends that are going to be best sellers in the next months. After researching, I post one trend per day and I demonstrate them with the pictures that I find. It excites me because of the social impact of fashion and because we express ourselves through fashion more than never. I see how a person is (or how he/she wants to be looked like) when I see the clothes that person wears.
What are you passionate about outside of work?
The real thing is that I love my job so much that my spare time is for fashion too. Shopping is one of my passions, although I don't buy anything I love seeing what's new; looking to people on the streets and hanging around to see what's going on. And traveling of course!
Does Madrid feed your passions?
Sometimes it surprises me, it's evolving and changing a lot. Specially some places like Malasaña, a really cool district. But the truth is that London, Paris or New York would feed me more in that particular aspect. I wouldn't be so forced to investigate via online.
Are there any trends or movements coming out of Madrid right now?
Yes, I think so but the truth is that I see people everyday that knows a lot about fashion. So I can't generalize in this particular point. Madrid and Spain in general is embracing technology; iPods and Blackberrys are everywhere. Last year it wasn't like this. We are giving a lot of importance to the social media and websites in business. Electronic books, too! In fashion, we are still copying a lot what we see as established trends, we are still afraid of experimenting. Anyway, there are really cool people that are taking the street more and more.
What kind of projects would you like to get involved in?
I'd like to do anything related to fashion trends for men and women, specially women.
Who would your dream collaborators be?
Difficult question, there are so many... I'd like to work with Suzy Menkes, Cathy Horyn, Emmanuelle Alt, Scott Schuman, Anna Wintour, Caroline Palmer, Anna dello Russo, Lagy Gaga, Christophe Decarnin, Amancio Ortega, Kate Moss...
If you could improve just one thing in the world what would it be?
Self-esteem should be obligatory for everybody. The lack of it makes the world a place full of sad and sometimes potentially dangerous people.
